Express Entry manages the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades Program. Eligible candidates create a profile and are ranked in the pool. Program eligibility comes first; the Comprehensive Ranking System then affects competitiveness for an invitation.
Who this route suits
Skilled workers, people with qualifying Canadian experience, and eligible trades workers.
Overview
Express Entry is a federal points-based immigration management system. Eligible candidates submit an Expression of Interest, receive a CRS score, and may receive an Invitation to Apply. Meeting program requirements is the first step. CRS ranking determines competitiveness in the pool.
Programs inside Express Entry
Express Entry manages three federal programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). Each has distinct eligibility requirements. A candidate must qualify for at least one program to enter the pool.
How the CRS works
The Comprehensive Ranking System assigns points based on age, education, language, work experience, and other factors. Candidates with higher scores receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) during draw rounds. Draws can be program-specific or general. Scores required for invitations vary over time.
What eligibility means
Meeting program requirements means your profile may be valid for the pool. It does not mean you will receive an invitation at a particular score. The current cut-off depends on the draw type, the pool composition, and IRCC selection priorities at the time.
Provincial and other pathways
Provincial Nominee Programs can add 600 points to a CRS score when a nomination is issued. Some draws are reserved for PNP, French-language, or sector-specific candidates. These pathways should be reviewed alongside federal eligibility.
Important to know
FSWP, CEC, and FSTP sit inside Express Entry. CRS is a ranking system, not a separate program.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between FSWP, CEC, and FSTP?
- FSWP is for skilled workers outside Canada with qualifying foreign work experience. CEC is for people who have already worked in Canada. FSTP targets skilled trades workers. All three are managed through Express Entry.
- Does a higher CRS score guarantee an ITA?
- No. A higher score makes you more competitive but does not guarantee an invitation. Draw thresholds vary based on pool composition and IRCC priorities.
- Can I improve my CRS score?
- Yes. Improving language test scores, completing Canadian education, gaining provincial nominations, or adding a qualifying job offer are common ways to improve your CRS.
