Engineering in Canada is provincially regulated. Each province has its own professional engineering association (APEGA in Alberta, PEO in Ontario, etc.). The P.Eng. (Professional Engineer) designation is required for certain regulated activities.
Who needs this
Internationally educated engineers seeking professional registration in Canada.
Academic assessment
Most provincial associations require an assessment of engineering qualifications. The International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES) or provincial programs may assess foreign degrees.
Important to know
ICES or WES may be used for credential evaluation before applying to provincial associations.
Registration and your visa
Professional registration and immigration are separate processes, decided by different authorities. A visa does not give permission to practise a regulated profession, and registration does not give a right to live or work in Canada. Planning both together avoids delays.
Frequently asked questions
- How long does registration take?
- Timelines vary by profession and individual circumstances. Starting the process early — before or alongside the immigration application — is strongly recommended.
- Can I practice while my registration is being processed?
- In most cases no. Some professions allow supervised practice during a transition period. Verify with the specific regulatory body.
