The Opportunity Card allows eligible applicants to come to Germany to look for qualified employment. Some qualify through recognized skilled-worker status; others use the points route and meet the underlying qualification, language, and financial requirements.
Who this route suits
Qualified professionals who want to search for work in Germany.
Two eligibility tracks
Track 1: Recognized German qualification or foreign qualification officially recognized as equivalent. Track 2: Points-based route requiring at least six points from qualifications, language, work experience, Germany connection, and age factors.
Financial requirement
Applicants must show sufficient funds to cover their stay in Germany while job searching. This requirement applies to both tracks.
Duration and job search
The Opportunity Card is valid for up to one year. During this time, holders can take up trial employment for two weeks per employer. Once a suitable job is found, the holder can switch to a work visa or permit.
Important to know
Use a live points calculator, but make clear that points are only one part of eligibility.
