Subclass 189 is a permanent visa for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, family member, or state or territory government. Applicants must submit an Expression of Interest through SkillSelect and receive an invitation to apply.
Who this route suits
Skilled applicants with an assessed occupation, qualifying points, and no requirement for nomination.
Points test and SkillSelect
Applicants must score at least 65 points and submit an EOI through SkillSelect. The Department of Home Affairs invites the highest-scoring candidates from the pool in draw rounds. Higher scores improve competitiveness but do not guarantee an invitation.
Skills assessment requirement
Before submitting an EOI, applicants must obtain a positive skills assessment from the relevant Australian assessing authority for their nominated occupation.
Family inclusion
A partner and dependent children can be included in a Subclass 189 application. Family members may need health and character checks.
Important to know
Do not treat SkillSelect as the visa itself; it is the expression-of-interest and invitation process for relevant skilled visas.
Frequently asked questions
