Federal Skilled Trades Program

This program focuses on people with qualifying experience in eligible skilled trades. Depending on the case, a qualifying job offer or Canadian certificate of qualification can be relevant.

General information only. Requirements change. IRCC makes the final decision.

Eligibility overview

Applicants need at least two years of full-time or equivalent paid work experience in a skilled trade within the last five years. The occupation must fall in eligible NOC TEER 2 or 3 trade categories.

Job offer or certificate requirement

Applicants must have either a qualifying full-time job offer from up to two employers in Canada totaling at least one year, or a Canadian provincial or territorial certificate of qualification in a qualifying trade.

Language requirements

Minimum CLB 5 in speaking and listening, CLB 4 in reading and writing. Valid test results from a designated language testing organization must be submitted with the application.

No education requirement

Unlike FSWP, FSTP does not have a minimum education requirement. This makes it accessible to experienced tradespeople who may not have post-secondary qualifications.
